Africa is urbanising at breakneck speed. By 2050, over 1.5 billion Africans will live in cities — that’s more than double today’s number. Lagos, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Cairo, Dar es Salaam… these names won’t just be cities; they’ll be megacities. If the world wants to understand the future of growth, it must look here.

But here’s the twist: we’re not just talking about more people crammed into bigger cities. We’re talking about a new kind of African city, resilient, tech-driven, and designed to solve today’s problems while anticipating tomorrows.

And this is where experience counts. At Dwalalam, we’ve seen enough master plans gathering dust and ribbon-cuttings delayed indefinitely to know the truth: building African cities for 2050 isn’t about copying what worked in the West or Asia. It’s about creating models that fit African realities.

The Growth Challenge: Too Fast, Too Uneven

Urban growth in Africa is the fastest in the world. But it’s not neat, orderly, or evenly distributed. Some cities double in population every 15 years while others stagnate. That means one-size-fits-all infrastructure solutions won’t work.

Lesson from experience: We’ve watched projects fail because they were designed as if Africa were a uniform market. It’s not. Context matters, what works in Addis won’t necessarily work in Accra.

The 2050 Model: What African Cities Need

So, what does infrastructure need to look like in 2050? Not glossy concept art. Not “future cities” that look like imported sci-fi films. We’re talking about practical, scalable, context-aware models:

Integrated Mobility – Roads alone won’t cut it. We need a blend of buses, light rail, bike lanes, and yes, walkable streets. Think access, not just asphalt.

Decentralised Energy – The dream of mega power plants lighting entire countries is fading. Mini-grids, solar rooftops, and hybrid systems are the African way forward.

Water Security Systems – By 2050, water will be as political as oil. Cities need smart distribution, recycling, and localised treatment facilities.

Digital Infrastructure First – Fibre, 5G, data centres, these aren’t luxuries. They’re the new highways of commerce.

Climate-Resilient Design – Cities must be built to survive floods, droughts, and heat waves. It’s not optional anymore.

Why Projects Fail (and How They Don’t Have To)

Let’s be honest: many projects don’t fail because of poor engineering. They fail because of poor alignment. Leadership changes midstream, communities aren’t consulted, or finance is structured for quick wins rather than long-term sustainability.

From our seat at Dwalalam, we’ve seen projects thrive when they:

  • Put people before politics.
  • Treat communities as co-owners, not obstacles.
  • Build modular, scalable solutions instead of “monuments.”
  • Align funding with realistic delivery, not political calendars.

The 2050 Opportunity

Here’s the upside: Africa doesn’t have to retrofit old mistakes. Unlike Europe or North America, most of our infrastructure is still to be built. That’s an advantage.

If we get this right, Africa can pioneer the world’s most sustainable, people-centred urban models. Our cities won’t just be bigger; they’ll be smarter, greener, and fairer.
